Pandora and Steve

On Friday, December the 4th, I met with Steve Bucciarelli and Pandora, a magnificent young Bald Eagle. The encounter, which took place at Gibbons Park in downtown London, was part of a photo opportunity for Nature in the City. This six-part series of illustrated talks on urban nature starts on January 19, 2010 at 7:30 pm at the Central Library of the London Public Library. Steve, the first speaker in the series, will be presenting a talk called "Soaring with Raptors: Masterful Fliers, Skilful Hunters". Pandora, the Bald Eagle youngster, is neither bald (too young) nor seemingly child-like (a fierce look in her eyes and a wing span of 2 metres). At Gibbons Park, it was interesting to watch the number of people who were attracted to Steve and Pandora and, conversely, the number of park waterfowl that very quickly disappeared when Pandora was removed from her box. A licensed falconer, Steve uses raptors, including Pandora, to scare off nuisance birds such as gulls and starlings. Steve promises to be a very engaging speaker. With Pandora and the other raptors who will accompany him on stage, a fabulous evening is guaranteed. All are welcome (no admission charge).
