True North Favourite: Hardy Boys Mysteries

I remember that I was about 11 when I read The Tower Treasure, the first title in the Hardy Boys mystery series. I used to read with a flashlight in bed when I was supposed to be sleeping. At one time I had the whole Hardy Boys series up to book 58. While at library school at Western University, in a children's literature course, I was devastated to learn that author Franklin W. Dixon was a collective pseudonym, that the Hardy Boys mysteries were actually written by a number of ghostwriters. One of those writers was a Canadian, Charles Leslie McFarlane (1902-1977), and he authored the first 19 books in the series. McFarlane was raised in Haileybury, Ontario and today you can follow in McFarlane's footsteps by going on the Ghost of the Hardy Boys Historic Walking Tour in Haileybury, as I have done.
